Newly recovered doorbell camera footage has introduced a dramatic development in the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, as federal and local authorities intensify efforts to bring the 84 year old home safely.
The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released images and short video clips captured by a Google Nest device installed outside Nancy’s Tucson residence. The footage, recorded in the early hours of February 1, appears to show a masked and armed individual approaching her front door — just hours before she was reported missing.
Suspect Appears To Tamper With Camera
According to investigators, the individual seen in the footage attempts to disable the camera system. The suspect is observed manipulating the device, eventually disconnecting and removing it. At one point, the person also tries to obscure the lens using nearby foliage.
For many following the case, the images are unsettling.
Authorities believe Nancy was taken from her home against her will. She had returned from dinner with family on January 31 and was reported missing the following day after failing to attend church. Officials have also confirmed she requires daily medication that was left behind at the residence.
How Investigators Retrieved The Footage
What may have appeared to be an effort to erase evidence has instead become a potential breakthrough.
Private investigator Andy Kay explained that internet connected security cameras often store short term data on backend servers. Even without a paid subscription, recent footage may remain temporarily preserved before being overwritten.
If a device is disconnected before new recordings replace existing data, the last captured images can sometimes remain accessible.
In Nancy’s case, authorities confirmed the footage was successfully retrieved from residual data stored in backend systems. The recovery required coordination between law enforcement and private technology partners.
Kay noted that attempts to disable digital recording devices can sometimes expose critical evidence rather than eliminate it, particularly when suspects underestimate how modern cloud storage systems function.
Savannah Guthrie Shares Emotional Plea
After authorities released the images, Savannah Guthrie publicly shared the footage, urging anyone who may recognize the individual to contact law enforcement.
“We believe she is still alive,” she wrote.
The family has repeatedly asked the public for help, emphasizing that any small detail could prove significant.
Ransom Messages And Ongoing Investigation
Investigators previously confirmed they are reviewing ransom messages demanding cryptocurrency. However, officials have stated that no continued communication was received after a reported deadline passed.
At this time, no suspect or person of interest has been publicly identified. Authorities continue to describe the case as active and ongoing.
A Fragile Glimmer Of Hope
For Nancy’s loved ones, the recovered footage represents both fear and possibility — a disturbing glimpse into the night she vanished, but also evidence that digital traces can survive even deliberate attempts to erase them.
As investigators analyze every frame and pursue new leads, the focus remains unchanged: bringing Nancy Guthrie home safely.
Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.
