The Sussexes’ reported return to royal territory has sparked an emotional reaction, with critics questioning why Meghan Markle appears willing to reconnect with the family she once left behind.
Meghan, 44, reportedly joined Prince Harry, 41, and their two children for a private meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire on Friday, July 10.
The gathering, which included seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet, would mark a significant change after years of tension between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.
But rather than viewing the visit simply as an attempt to heal old wounds, commentators on TalkTV suggested there could be another reason behind Meghan’s apparent change of direction.
Digital Spy editor Sarah-Louise Robertson claimed the Duchess had previously seemed determined to remain in California and avoid returning to Britain. She argued that few people would have expected Meghan to step inside a royal residence again after the couple’s highly publicised departure from royal life.
Robertson also suggested that the Sussexes’ ambitions in the United States may not have produced the level of financial success they originally expected.
According to the commentator, rebuilding a relationship with the King could now offer Meghan renewed status and future opportunities. She alleged that the couple’s children may have become an important part of that effort, describing their connection to their grandfather as something the Sussexes could use to strengthen their position.
The claims were not supported by evidence during the discussion, and neither Harry nor Meghan was quoted responding to the accusations.
TalkTV presenter Mark Dolan nevertheless described Meghan’s presence at Highgrove as highly symbolic, given the public breakdown between the Sussexes and the wider Royal Family since their move to California.
Robertson argued that Meghan may now recognise the influence and access she once had after marrying Harry in 2018. She claimed the Duchess had hoped to build a major Hollywood career after leaving royal duties, but now sees reconciliation with King Charles as potentially beneficial.
The commentator drew a distinction between Meghan’s alleged motives and Harry’s feelings toward his family.
She claimed the Duke has become increasingly homesick and genuinely wants to repair his relationship with relatives in Britain. In her view, Harry’s interest is emotional rather than financial, with the prince missing England and hoping to restore some of what was lost after the couple stepped away from royal life.
Meghan, Robertson suggested, remains committed to living in California but may now be prepared to support Harry’s attempts at reconciliation because a warmer relationship with the King could also improve the couple’s public standing.
The private meeting has fuelled speculation about whether the long-running royal feud may finally be softening. However, claims that Meghan’s decision was motivated by money remain the opinion of television commentators rather than confirmed information from the Sussexes or Buckingham Palace.
