Viewers of BBC Breakfast expressed their annoyance during the latest broadcast.

Charlie Stayt and Rachel Burden were back presenting from the Salford studio on Friday (May 29), bringing the nation the day’s top stories from Britain and beyond.

During the programme, Charlie and Rachel unveiled the answer to this week’s Brain Test. The show has recently been challenging audiences with weekly puzzles, however the most recent one disappointed several viewers.

Mathematician Matt Parker set the challenge: “Your challenge is to work out the fewest number of items of clothing you can own so that you never repeat an outfit for an entire year.”

Matt subsequently shared the solution, explaining: “The answer depends slightly on your view on decency, because if you insist on always wearing clothes all the time, you can get away with just 17 items of clothing,” reports the Mirror.

He elaborated: “They need to be across five different categories. You need five of one thing, let’s say five shirts, and then you need three of the other four categories. So, three trousers, three jackets, three shoes, three hats. And by picking different combinations of those, [you get] 5 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 405. So, you’ve actually got a few outfits spare.”

Matt went on: “If you don’t care about decency and you accept that not wearing something counts, then you can get all the way down to just nine items. If you had nine different things, and every day you either do or don’t wear every single one of them, you actually end up with 512 outfits, but at some point you’re not wearing trousers.”

Back in the studio, Charlie enquired: “Clear for you, Rachel?” with Rachel observing: “Well, what he’s actually describing there, Charlie, is a capsule wardrobe.”

BBC audiences were left frustrated by the vague nature of the solution, with many heading to X (previously Twitter) to voice their criticism, while others called for the feature to be axed completely.

“These puzzles have had their day, annoying,” one viewer posted, with another stating: “Agree, they need to get rid.”

A third remarked, “C**p question,” and another viewer contributed, “I don’t care about the question.”

A fifth audience member shared the view, writing: “WTF is this s****? No more please,” with another noting: “He’s making it up as he goes along puzzle man.” Someone else posted: “What a s*** question with an ambiguous answer.”

Charlie and Rachel subsequently revealed the following quiz challenge, which required viewers to work out the colour of a shape within a pattern series.

Elsewhere on today’s BBC Breakfast, the presenters covered reports of a Blue Origin rocket exploding on a launch pad at Cape Canaveral in Florida. They also celebrated brothers Jordan and Cian Adams, who completed 33 marathons in 33 days to raise awareness of frontotemporal dementia.
