TV star and podcaster Sam Thompson has revealed he still has concerns about his throat following an operation in February this year. The 33-year-old star underwent vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst, which was caused by years of excessive shouting and voice strain. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here 2023 winner confessed: “I actually came back too quickly, so I’ve got to go back to the guy again, because I don’t know if it’s actually healed properly, because I lose my voice even quicker than before now. I feel like I might have scarred it because I went back way too quick, because I just want to be talking,” he laughed.

Sam was ordered to observe strict vocal rest for three days following the procedure however he admitted he found this excruciating being unable to speak. “That was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Not he surgery, which is not overly invasive. They put you sleep, they cut something out, and it is what it is.

“The not speaking for, for three and a half days. At all. That was really hard. You don’t think it’s going to be hard, but then you think there’s so much you have to do.

“I get in my own head. So I was sat there just really panicking about my job and career…and not even relaxing and healing,” he said.

Sam first acknowledged there was an issue when best friend and podcast co-star Pete Wicks kept commenting on his raspy voice and ribbed him about talking too much. Reflecting on it now Sam laughs at the fact he was actually right and there was an issue.

“It did come from over talking, that’s the thing. It was a cyst I had on my right vocal cord, and it actually came because I shout too much and I project too much, and I’m too full on. So actually he was technically right, he just said it in a different way.”

Despite his concerns Sam’s voice seemed fine as he spoke over Zoom in his role as ambassador for the YOLÉ campaign – the Sevillian take on YOLO – from lager brand Cruzcampo.

The campaign which sees them give people achance to win a trip to Seville and nab some free pints came about after research showed the average Brit hasn’t done anything spontaneous in 80 days while one in five Brits have never done anything spontaneous – not even a last-minute trip to the pub.

As someone who famously says yes to everything he is offered Sam was delighted to be on board with the campaign. “This is so up my street, it’s all about spontaneity, and that’s something that I almost have too much of I’d say,” he laughed.

“I love the idea of actually getting people to do something that’s outside their routine, because we Brits love a routine. I think it’s really fun, and I think it’s something that actually is going to catch on a little bit, and especially when you’re giving away free pints, as well,” he smiled.
