SAD NEWS: Gogglebox star d!es aged 75 after ‘short illness’ as fans are left completely heartbroken over tragic loss

Fans of Gogglebox are mourning the loss of one of the show’s most beloved stars after it was confirmed that Ken Harwood has died at the age of 77 following a short illness.

Channel 4 bosses announced the heartbreaking news this week, revealing that Ken passed away last week and confirming a special tribute would air during tonight’s episode of the hit show. For longtime viewers, the news hit especially hard, with many remembering the warmth and humour he brought alongside his wife, Anne Harwood.

The couple quickly became fan favourites after joining the series in 2020, appearing together for five seasons between series 15 and 19. Married for 55 years, Ken and Anne were known for their playful chemistry, sharp observations, and deeply affectionate relationship that viewers instantly connected with.

One of their most memorable early moments came during their debut episode, when Ken surprised Anne with 50 roses to celebrate their decades together. Anne jokingly admitted she hadn’t bought him anything in return, before telling him: “You have me and that’s all you need.” Which, frankly, is either the sweetest thing ever said on television or the greatest budget-saving tactic in marriage history.

Away from television, Ken lived a full life rooted in County Durham. Born in Consett in 1948, he worked as a postmaster for three decades before later serving as a local councillor until his retirement in 2013.

In a statement, the show’s producers said Ken would be “dearly missed” by Anne, their sons Simon and Ross, daughter-in-law Elle, grandchildren Freya and Tristram, and everyone who knew him.

His death has also reopened memories of several heartbreaking losses connected to the Gogglebox family over the years.

Former cast member George Gilbey tragically died in 2024 following a workplace accident after falling from a height. Before that, viewers also said goodbye to fan favourites Mary Cook in 2021, as well as legendary couple Leon Bernicoff and June Bernicoff, who became household names after appearing on the programme from its early years.

Meanwhile, another former Gogglebox personality has recently made headlines for a very different reason. Josh Tapper, who left the show nearly a decade ago, was recently elected as a Labour councillor in Barnet after winning more than 1,100 votes.

But tonight’s focus will firmly remain on Ken, whose gentle humour and down-to-earth charm helped make him one of the show’s most treasured figures. In a programme built around ordinary people reacting to television, Ken somehow became unforgettable television himself.
