Prince Harry Calls Himself ‘Prince of England’ as Podcast Joke Takes an Unexpectedly Personal Turn
Prince Harry’s playful attempt to describe his job has become the moment everyone is talking about after he referred to himself as a “full-time dad” and “Prince of England.”
The Duke of Sussex made the remark during a relaxed podcast appearance recorded at an Invictus Games event in Birmingham, where he joined former England rugby player Joe Marler and co-host Jake Bhardwaj.
Asked what he did for a living, Harry paused before answering: “Full-time dad, uh, British Army veteran, Prince of England.”
The comment immediately stood out, but Harry was clearly in the mood to keep the title jokes going.
At the beginning of the episode, he introduced himself using his full name, “Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex.”
Bhardwaj pointed out that it was “a long one,” prompting Harry to respond: “Alright, Jake.”
The hosts then began chanting “Duke” repeatedly as Harry entered the set, leaving Marler jokingly asking what had just happened.
Harry later repeated his Duke of Sussex title using an exaggerated upper-class pronunciation, fully leaning into the hosts’ teasing.
When they attempted to settle on an official occupation for him, the group suggested everything from “duke” to “inventor” of the Invictus Games.
Harry appeared happy to go along with either, although he said people could simply call him Harry or “H.”
His current royal position remains slightly more complicated than the podcast jokes suggested.
Harry was born Prince Henry Charles Albert David as the younger son of the then Prince of Wales, who is now King Charles III.
He later received the peerage title Duke of Sussex and also holds the titles Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.
Meghan is styled the Duchess of Sussex, while their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, became entitled to use prince and princess titles as grandchildren of the monarch through the male line.
After Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals in 2020, Buckingham Palace announced that they would no longer use their HRH styles in practice.
Although the podcast began with plenty of jokes, the conversation became more emotional when Harry spoke about his life as a father.
He explained that he makes a point of showing physical affection to Archie and Lilibet, just as his mother, Princess Diana, had done with him.
“If a day is hard, one thing I will do is always squeeze my kids that extra, extra tight,” Harry said.
He also reflected on the way children respond to difficult situations, describing their resilience as “amazing.”
“The way they view life is so incredibly refreshing,” he added.
The Duke also showed that he was comfortable making himself the target of the jokes.
Discussing his hair, Harry rejected the description “ginger” and instead called the colour “sunset auburn.”
He admitted he tries not to pay too much attention to what is happening on top of his head, joking that there was “nothing really happening” while pointing towards his hairline.
His television habits also came under scrutiny.
When asked to name his preferred “trashy” programme, Harry selected Love Island, although he quickly clarified: “I don’t watch Love Island, I have watched Love Island.”
The hosts later asked which famous Harry he would choose to become for a day, giving him Harry Styles, Harry Potter and footballer Harry Kane as options.
Harry chose the England captain, but only under one condition.
“Kane on a winning day,” he replied.
That led naturally into a discussion about England’s World Cup chances, with the Duke offering a hopeful prediction.
“I think it’s coming home,” he said, before adding that it would not be easy.
The Birmingham appearance was connected to the Invictus Games, the international sporting competition Harry founded in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick serving military personnel and veterans.
The project was partly inspired by the Warrior Games in the United States, with the first Invictus Games taking place in London.
Since then, the competition has been hosted in cities including Orlando, Toronto, Sydney, The Hague and Düsseldorf.
Events include athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball, while Harry has continued to play a highly visible role in the organisation.
During the podcast, however, his most important position appeared to be the first one he mentioned.
Behind the royal titles, military service and Invictus responsibilities, Harry presented himself primarily as a father.
And although “Prince of England” may have delivered the biggest laugh, his comments about hugging his children revealed the more personal side of the interview.
